Example for us

Once, a visitor was being shown around a leper colony in India. The colony was built to provide a shelter for those people who were poor and had various physical disabilities. At noon a gong (a metal disk that produces a sound when hit with a hammer) sounded to gather the inhabitants for the midday meal. People came from all parts of the compound to the dining hall. Suddenly, everyone started laughing at seeing two young men, one riding on the other’s back, pretending to be a horse and a rider. They were having lots of fun. As the visitor watched, he was told that the man who carried his friend was blind, and the man being carried was lame (who couldn’t walk). The one who couldn’t see used his feet; the one who couldn’t walk used his eyes. Together they helped each other and reached their destination.

Let us use each other’s strengths to make up for the weaknesses of others. Our strength is in unity, not in division.

Can a German Forget?

Annual days are one of the most cherishing moments of my school life. On that particular day we could feel a little bit of freedom. Although it is a one day programme its memories will remain throughout that year. Many cultural programmes will be conducted. I was in 8th. Annual day preparations had just begun. Our English teacher, George M.T was trying to bring a skit for the function. He opted to select from my batch. There were selection trials in which we had to read a section of a drama and present it. I was confident that I had done it well. There were almost 20 students for the selection. He selected 8 from it, and pointing me he said. Shafeeq would do the main role. It was unbelievable. I was very happy.

The rehearsal started. Dialogues were prepared and practiced. I had the role of the great German dictator Hitler. For knowing more about him I referred many books. I got much interest in his character and even started admiring that amazing historian.

The day has arrived. The final rehearsal was done the previous night. I was nervous. George sir gave me the costumes for the skit. There was a police cap, which he had rented. Wearing it with the other costumes made me really tough. He also gave me a mustache like the one Hitler had. My friends also had their costumes.

The time was closer. I was in the backstage. I had to wear a long boot and it was necessary practice to walk with it. At last our call came. The curtain was down. After arranging the stage George sir left the stage bidding a good luck. As the curtain raised my heart started to bounce. It was the first time I was playing a major role in a skit. There a big light to the stage which didn't allow us to see the audience. The skit went normal. I tried my best to express the best of my role. I could keep a face without laugh throughout the play.

It was a story of Hitler's reign. All characters were working in Hitler's residence. The main theme is that everyone forget something and angry Hitler scolds each of them. At last when he raises himself from his seat angrily the audience can see that he was not wearing a pants. Believing that a German cannot forget, Hitler orders his gunman to shoot him. But when the gunman tries to shoot him, there is no bullet since the gunman had forgot to load the gun. Thus it ends.

I can't forget that role. Its dialogues. I can't forget the main dialogue in it..."Can a German forget?"

A free Movie

'I am going out. Are you coming with me? Its boring here.' I asked Jerri.

It was a really boring day sitting in the room in front of the laptop browsing. I checked the facebook account to see find some updates. Oh, there is a new video. Its about some 2d cinema to be displayed in the University. The video was a trailor.

'Interesting! There is no entry fee.' I said myself. Suddenly Jeff Came to the room. He took his bunch of chocolates and offered them to Jerri. Jeff had bought chocolates for £5 when he found it cheap. Jerri took one chocolate and was back to his serious browsing. 'Oh! This guy is stuck to this' I thought.

'Hey Jeff. There is a movie at Sports Centre. I am going. Do you want to come?' I asked Jeff.

'Really. When is it?' Jeff asked curiously

'Its starts at 7.' I answered him looking at the watch. 'Oh man! Its already 7. Hurry up if you are coming.'

We walked with pace to the University. It was drizzling. We reached the sports centre in 5 minutes. The movie had already started. Seeing the crowd I almost doubted if I was in the right place. There were only 8 people watching the movie.

I found a place in the centre to get a good angle. I moved the chair to my right near to a girl and asked how much I missed. ' It just started and you are right on time.' She answered with a smile. Within minutes I fell deep in to the movie. It was a movie based on 4 students in a University who has their own issues. It showed the incidents in a night where 2 boys struggle to finish their assignment which they were supposed to submit the next day. I checked with the girl next to me when a comedy scene came. But she she was half asleep.

After the movie I asked the girl about the movie. ' She said she enjoyed it alot.' I knew that she slept. So I asked 'Which character did you like the most?' She started to feel nervous and said ' I don't remember the names.' I helped her and asked 'How about Tom?'. She nodded to me and said 'Yes that one.' I understood how much she liked the movie from that answer.

Jeff and I met the director and producer to congratulate their work. We left to the room.

English Classes

'I am Shafeeq Sha from Malappuram dist....' I started my usual self introduction practice in front of my classmates. I had enrolled for IELTS classes at DLS Perinthalmanna. Roshna gave a boring look after hearing me more than 30 times in this period. Benazir had to present next and was fully in her preparation. When she was moving her lips I even felt like she was trying to tell me something. While Prabhakaran was listening to me and trying to find some errors in my presentation.

In the mean time Thoufeeq sir listened to me patiently with a smile on his face. He wanted me to bring up with a better presentation than the previous. As I finished the Introduction they gave me some errors I have made.

It was a good time that I spend in DLS. Thoufeeq sir worked hard to make us well prepared for the exam. He even made some videos of our presentation and showed to us. It really helped us find our small mistakes and correct them when we get a second chance.

There were many interactive sessions where we played some english puzzles and games. Sometimes we got the position of the interviewer. These things helped to make a better evaluation of our English language skills.

ANUKUTTAN- We miss You!

Hi guys!

Last Monday, Sadik and I went to see Anukkuttan's family.

We could see the house and the family members. Some points that we noted are below.

1. Anukkuttan is survived by his father, mother, younger brother and grand-mother who now lives with the family.

2. They no longer live in the school. They have bought a small house with the money they got from selling his father's ancestral property in Kottayam.

3. His mother works in the school, where she cooks food for the kids.

4. His father drives a truck, and transports odd stuff like wood, timber, sand ...etc

5. His brother, in his own admission was 'unlike my brother, not good with studies'

6. He is a conductor in a school bus, and loves vehicles and driving and aspires to be a driver someday.

7. Though the guy is well short of the age for a heavy-duty license,(he is almost 19) he is looking forward to driving a bus.

Lets plan to contribute something to the family. I will start an Account soon. Meanwhile we can fix what should we give them. Feel free to discuss at any time.

The Birthday Boy

I woke up hearing my mobile ring. I was not at all in a mood to open my eyes. Blaming the caller I took the blanket off my face. It’s not a bad time to wake up. The sun has already shown up. Attending the call I looked for the time. 9:45 am. So it was my mistake sleeping till dawn. I had slept late seeing the Champions League matches. It was Sreehari on the phone. He started with a pause giving me time to respond in consciousness. ‘What’s up?’He asked. ‘Is this what you have called for?’ I asked a bit harshly. ‘Today is Alumni day.’ He answered. At that second I regained consciousness.

‘Come fast. We are late for the class.’ Shamil called me when he left the door. We rushed to the Main block. Students have already gathered there. We joined the Assembly. I was sweating and I found a place right below a fan. My gasping had not stopped. The assembly continued with prayer, pledge and speech. There was a Birthday celebration function too. I peeped on my toes to see who the lucky one was. It was Niroop. Principal gave him a Birthday card and in return he gave some sweets. I was happy thinking about receiving the sweets from class. It is a very interesting custom in our school to allow the student to celebrate birthday. The student can wear formal dress on his birthday and there will be distribution of cards on the stage during assembly. Totally it will be a memorable occasion for him.

Removing the blanket I arose from the bed. Getting myself some stretching I moved towards the dining hall. Mother had already left for school preparing my breakfast. Whenever I was home it was some extra work for my mother doing all the household work apart from the teaching job. I opened the lid of the Tiffin box and tasted it. She prepares well in this rush too. Taking the newspaper in one hand and brush in other I started brushing.

We got 2 chocolates each from Niroop. It was the mathematics period. I checked the timetable to confirm that the next hour was Sports. When the bell rang we set ourselves ready to flush to the ground for playing football. I looked at Niroop he was already up from his seat. Suddenly Mr. Suresh the teacher enquired which the period is. Someone from the front row mesmerizingly said ‘Sports’. From his gesture we understood that he was not in a plan to wind up the session. He said I am going to take one more period those who want to go can go. That was really a confusing statement. Almost 10 of us came out of the class. We splitted in two and started the game. We were tensed about the after effects. Mr. Suresh is very strict and always reacts badly when someone disobey him. The game progressed well and the birthday boy scored. We were often having an eye to the windows of our class.

After taking bath I locked the house and left. I had a function at my neighbourhood. To get some company I went to roadside to meet some friends. There was Salam in his shop. After talking for a while Salam closed the shop and we left. I have known him since I joined in CET. At that time he was a Second year B.Com student in a near by private college. But he had to quit his studies due to some family issues. I often tried to make him complete his degree, but he never understood the importance of it. He was sticked on to the shop which is the source of his family earning.

I was quite sure that Mr. Suresh would treat us really bad. He has proved himself at different occasions. Once he scolded me for fasting during Ramzan saying that it was trouble for the teachers to take care of us if we fall sick. We often try to change the school customs through our student representatives. There were meetings with the staff and student representatives which often were a consensus; there was always a predefined decision.

I reached home and was spending time on the TV remote. Sreehari called again. ‘How is the function?’I asked. ‘Not much participation. Hope it will be over by 4pm.’I heard the shattering sound in background. Suddenly he said ‘Prasad sir is coming I will give him the phone.’ He was our Physics Teacher at school. Apart from others he had different approach to students; he tried to know us deeply. ‘Hi Shafeeq. How are you doing? Its long since I have met you people.’ I felt like I missed the function badly when I spoke to him.

The class was not finished. Mr. Suresh was still inside. We waited outside the class. When he came out we found his face turning pale with anger. ‘On your knees’ He ordered. Niroop stood there and all others kneeled down. Mr. Suresh asked Niroop to take the cane which was inside his table. Niroop came back in a couple of minutes. When Niroop handed Mr. Suresh the cane, he said looking at Niroop ‘Now what are you waiting for? Kneel.’ Niroop was amazed on the reaction of Mr. Suresh. The first beating in the roll was for Niroop. The birthday boy was not spared.

The Wall

When there is a restriction our curiosity won’t let us sit free. We will try to know what happens once we break the laws. It would be worse if we are at the age of exploring the world.

I stepped in to my residential school life at the age of 11. On crossing the gates like everyone else I also had taken too many decisions for my success. I wanted to be diligent, score high marks and thus make my parents proud of me. After the admission procedures my parents left the scene leaving me a few tears to wet my cheek. I am totally alone here. Up to this age I was cared and guided by my parents and relatives, now who will be there to care for me. I must stand on my own.

With my new friends I walked to our hostels just making simple introduction. For two or three days I was just a mass which could move, my mind was at home. But as we brought friendship in between gradually we gained the momentum of the hostel life. Beyond the classes and other activities in school I was really anxious about the long wall which covered the entire campus. I often tried to know what was outside these walls. I found many marks of trespassing done by our seniors. It was not only me who was anxious about this. Soon we also found a way out and discovered the secret of the world outside. It was just an ordinary village with no difference with that from our home. But we enjoyed being there. We could climb the trees, go to the shop and have a tea and more.

I was in 8th standard. Now it is almost three years since we are in this campus. We were playing cricket in the backyard of our hostel. At a stage I dropped a catch and missed an opportunity to take hold of the game. I was in a real bad mood. I heard someone abusing me for it. I turned around to see the person. But there was no one. It is Vishnu’s sound. Then where is he? Seeing me search out Vishnu called out. ‘Here’. He was on top of the mango tree outside the wall. Seeing him laugh I was really angry and I picked a stone just to threaten him. But he reacted saying. ‘Throw if you are a man’. I didn’t wait for a second chance. I threw the stone towards him. The target was almost 60 meters away and I didn’t have any intention of wounding him. It hit on his head. He was bleeding and soon he was taken to the nurse for dressing.

Next day I woke up just like everyday with no idea what was waiting for me. In the assembly I found Vishnu with a bandage covering his head fully. He had a small wound and he could have just covered the wound with a small piece of plaster. Now he can be recognized from any distance. I felt like he had done it intentionally to bring me in trouble. I saw our sports teacher Mr. Prasad approaching. I was praying not to find Vishnu. But imperceptibly he found Vishnu and started his questions. Vishnu pointed me. I walked to the front with my heart beating like a drum. I felt like being strangulated. He asked me what had happened. I was in a dilemma and was searching for a lie. At last I said that I threw a stone at a post and it accidently hit Vishnu. He was convinced by the lie but punishment was on the way. I was thinking about the punishment I am going to get. It may be some beatings or a few rounds in the ground. He stared at me and said at last pointing to a post near by. ‘Throw and hit that post 200 times’. It was a strange one and I felt confused. Is this for real? He called some girls and told them to pick stones for me. One by one I started to test my accuracy. The girls were trying even fun on me by picking the smallest stone possible. After some time I was left free with a warning note.
